General Liability, Workers' Comp and Applicator Licensing: What Each One Covers

Safety and standards
Residential property protected during tree work in the Omaha metro

Your property

General liability

Covers damage done to what you own while we are working: fence, roof, driveway, hardscape, the neighbor's shed. This is the certificate most people know to ask for, and it is the less important of the two.

Eden Tree Pros crew working a removal in Omaha

The people in your yard

Workers' compensation

Covers injury to the crew. This is the one that decides whether an accident on your property becomes a claim against your homeowner's policy, and it is the coverage uninsured operators most often skip.

Licensed applicator performing a trunk injection in Omaha

Anything applied

Nebraska applicator licensing

Commercial applicator licensing through the Nebraska Department of Agriculture for every injection, spray and soil treatment, with the required record of what went on which property and when.

Ours go out the same business day, straight from the agency.

How to Verify Any Tree Company's Insurance and Licensing in Ten Minutes

Talk to us
Storm-damaged tree being cleared from an Omaha property

Five checks, in order

Ask for it from the agency, not the contractor

Any legitimate company will have their agent email the certificate directly. A forwarded PDF is the easiest document in the world to edit.

Check the dates

Policies lapse. A certificate from eighteen months ago proves what was true eighteen months ago.

Ask to be named as certificate holder

It costs nothing, it puts your address on the document, and it means you are notified if the policy cancels.

Ask how long the crew has been doing this work

Years on the job, and years working this specific climate and species mix, are worth asking about directly.

Ask who is actually doing the work

A company can be insured and still send a subcontracted crew that is not. Ask whether the people in the yard are employees.

A forwarded PDF proves nothing. A certificate straight from the agency, with current dates, does.

Tyler was our crew foreman for a big tree removal project. He and his men did a wonderful job. They were courteous, on time, thorough, and did a good job cleaning up after themselves.

Uninsured Tree Crews: How a Cheap Bid Becomes Your Insurance Claim

Get an insured estimate

The bid

A crew with no workers' compensation quotes your job

They can price under everybody else, because coverage on tree work is one of the larger costs in the business.

The decision

You hire them, because the number is the lowest

Nothing about the paperwork came up, and nobody volunteered it.

This is the link that breaks. One email asking their agency for the certificate ends the chain here, and it costs nothing to send.

The day

Somebody is hurt on your property

A fall, a saw, a limb that swung wrong. The trade sits near the top of every list of dangerous jobs in the country.

The claim

It looks for a policy, and finds yours

With no employer coverage behind the injured worker, your homeowner's policy is the nearest thing standing.

Licensing and Insurance Questions: Certificates, Subcontractors and Coverage in Iowa

Ask us something else

How do I get your certificates?

Ask, and they go out the same business day, direct from our insurance agency rather than as a file we forward. Call 402-332-2839 or ask at the estimate.

Can I be named as certificate holder?

Yes, and you should ask every bidder for this, not only us. It puts your address on the document and means you are notified directly if the policy is cancelled.

Does Nebraska license tree services?

The state does not license arborists or tree companies as such. What it does license is pesticide application, which is why the applicator license matters on any treatment work. Everything else is voluntary, which is exactly why it tells you something about a company.

Do you use subcontractors?

Not on residential tree work. The crews are Eden employees, which is what makes the workers' compensation answer simple. On the rare specialist job that needs an outside crane operator, they carry their own coverage and we will tell you before the day.

What if a bidder says they are 'bonded'?

Bonding is a different thing and is often mentioned in place of the coverage that matters. It is not a substitute for liability or workers' compensation, and a company leading with it while dodging the other two is answering a question you did not ask.

What happens if you damage something?

You hear it from the crew lead before they leave, it goes to our liability carrier, and the repair is arranged. It is not deducted from your invoice, because the damage and the work are separate matters.

Do you carry coverage in Iowa too?

Yes. Council Bluffs, Carter Lake, Crescent, Glenwood and Missouri Valley are ordinary service areas and the coverage follows the crew across the river.

Ask every bidder for the certificates. Ours will be in your inbox today.

Why Insurance Verification Matters More Than Any Other Part of a Tree Care Bid

Safety and standards

Insurance is the least interesting thing a tree company can talk about and the most expensive thing to be wrong about. It is also the one part of a bid that a homeowner can verify completely, in about ten minutes, before anybody climbs anything.

The reason it comes up so often in this trade is arithmetic. Coverage on tree work is costly enough that dropping it moves a bid noticeably. So the cheapest number in a stack of three is sometimes a genuinely leaner operation, and sometimes it is the same work with the protection removed and the risk quietly handed to whoever owns the yard.

We are not asking anyone to take our word for which one we are. Ask for the certificates from our agency, ask for your address to be named on them, and ask how long the arborists on the crew have actually been doing this. Then ask every other bidder for exactly the same things. Whatever you decide after that, you will have made the decision with the information rather than around it — 402-332-2839 if you want ours today.
