When should I fertilize my lawn in Omaha?
Fall is the most important feeding of the year here and September is the heart of it, because cool-season grass puts its energy into roots as the soil cools. Spring feeding matters less than most people think and pushing nitrogen in April produces soft top growth that struggles in July. A sensible program feeds lightly in spring, holds off in the heat, and feeds properly from late August.
When is the aeration window?
Late August through September, and it is close to a hard deadline. Core aeration works because the turf recovers into the holes, and cool-season grass only does that vigorously while the soil is warm and the air is cooling. Spring aeration is possible and it is a distant second, partly because it opens the soil right when crabgrass is looking for somewhere to germinate.
Why is crabgrass control a March job?
Because crabgrass is an annual that germinates from seed each spring as soil temperature reaches the low fifties. A pre-emergent puts a barrier in the top layer of soil before that happens. Once the plants are up and visible in July, that barrier is irrelevant and you are into spot treatment, which is more expensive, less effective and has to be repeated.
How much should I water?
About an inch a week including rainfall, delivered in one or two deep soakings rather than a daily sprinkle. Deep and infrequent drives roots down; shallow and frequent keeps them at the surface where the first hot week kills them. Early morning is the right time, because evening watering leaves the blades wet overnight and invites disease.
