How to Tell What Is Causing Crown Dieback in a Thinning Tree

Something changed at ground level in the last few years
There was construction near the tree
A driveway, addition, trench or patio. Roots run wider than the branches, and cutting a quarter shows up two summers later.
The grade was changed
Soil over the root zone smothers fine roots that need air. A few inches of fill for a lawn does it, slowly enough nobody connects the two.
Vehicles park on the root zone
Compacted clay stops holding air and water, and it is the least suspected cause of decline here.
The twigs have grown almost nothing
Measure between the last few bud scars. Two inches a year on a tree that pushed a foot means the roots stopped supplying.
It is something else if
The tree is an ash, or the pattern is not top-down
It is an ash
Assume emerald ash borer and check the trunk for D-shaped holes, bark splits and blond woodpecker patches.
One limb wilted while the rest stayed green
A vascular disease flagging a branch at a time, not a general decline. Verticillium and Dutch elm both do it.
The leaves are yellow with green veins
Iron chlorosis. A chlorotic tree does eventually die back at the top, but the treatment is different.
The whole tree browned in weeks
Root failure, a herbicide hit, or gas in the soil. Fast and uniform is a different category from slow and top-down.
Where to Look for Crown Dieback on a Thinning Tree

Bare twig ends at the top of the crown are the first honest sign. Look for sky where there used to be leaves.
Twig extension over three years
The gaps between bud scars record each year's growth. Shrinking gaps tell you when this started.
Leaf size and color
Smaller, paler, thinner-set leaves across the whole canopy mean a supply problem rather than a disease.
The root flare
The trunk should widen where it meets the ground. One that goes in like a post means buried flare, girdling roots, or fill.
Send a photo of the tree and one of the damage. An arborist will name it before anybody drives out.
The same tree, left alone
Year one
A slightly open look at the top in late summer. Everyone blames a hot dry August, and sometimes that is right.
Year two
Bare twig ends across the upper crown and smaller leaves. Diagnosis is still cheap and the fix is usually water, mulch and time.
Year three
Whole scaffold branches dying in the top and sprouts breaking out lower down. The tree is rebuilding a smaller canopy nearer the ground.
Year four
More than half the crown is deadwood. Dead limbs over a driveway or roof make this a risk assessment rather than a health conversation.
Year five
A dead or unsound tree that has to come down, at a price set by what it stands over rather than what treating it would have cost.
A tree that has lost the top of its crown does not grow it back. Recovery is a smaller tree that stops losing ground, and that is worth saying in advance.

Root activity is high while the canopy shuts down. Deep root feeding, mulch and root collar excavation all belong here.
Dormant, the decisions
December through March
Structure is visible with leaves off. Deadwood pruning, cabling and removal get scheduled now.
Nothing here works in one season. A tree recovering from root damage is judged over three springs, by whether each is better than the last.

Why Crown Dieback Usually Starts With a Root Problem Underground
Tree risk assessmentA tree's canopy is the visible end of a system whose working half is buried. Most fine absorbing roots live in the top foot of soil and spread well past the branches. When that system loses capacity the tree sheds from the top down, because the top costs the most to keep. An arborist reading a thin crown spends more time at the trunk base than looking up.
In this metro the culprits are mechanical, not biological. A utility trench. An addition, a patio, a widened driveway. Fill spread over the root zone to level a yard. A skid steer parked on the same clay for a month. None of these causes a visible event, and all show up in the crown two to four years later, after the tree spends its reserves covering for the damage.
On an ash the order flips, because emerald ash borer has taken more than nine thousand trees here and produces exactly this pattern. On any other species the first useful things are free: stop parking on the root zone, spread mulch to the drip line, water deeply through August. If the crown is too far gone, we would rather run a risk assessment than take money for treating something that will not turn around.
