Elkhorn is on Omaha's books but keeps its own name, and its trees tell you why: a small old core around Main Street, ringed by some of the fastest subdivision growth in the state.
The new ring
Most of Elkhorn's housing is new, built on ground that grew corn until the graders arrived. Topsoil stripped, clay compacted, trees installed the week before closing. Nearly everything we are called out for here is a young tree failing to establish, and nearly all of it traces back to the soil or the planting.
The old core
The blocks around downtown Elkhorn carry the trees the original town planted — mature maples and hackberries that need real pruning, occasional cabling and, eventually, honest removal conversations. It is a small pocket, and it gets treated differently than the ring around it.
The builder plantings
Production builders plant fast and identically, which means when something goes wrong it goes wrong down the entire street. Deep planting, trunk-piled mulch and girdling roots are the three we correct most, and correcting them early is cheap.
An arborist can usually be in Elkhorn within the week. Storm calls are same day.
New trees that never take off
Planted too deep or root-bound from the container. A root collar check tells us in ten minutes, and the fix is small if it happens now.

Iron chlorosis from graded, high-pH clay — Elkhorn's ring is textbook for it. Injection reverses it.
Wind exposure on open edges
The newest streets face open fields, and young trees take the full force. Staking, structure pruning and species choice all matter more here.

Retention areas, monument plantings and street trees installed in bulk, needing assessment and a plan a board can act on.
Right species for clay and wind, planted at the right depth — often replacing a builder tree that failed.

Because the ground they are planted in is not the ground that grew crops here. Construction strips the topsoil and compacts the clay underneath, and the pH runs high. Trees can absolutely thrive in it, but they need the right species, the right planting depth and usually some soil help in the early years.
Yes, honestly. We check the root collar, the planting depth and the mulch in one short visit, and the two most common problems — planted too deep, mulch against the trunk — are cheap to fix now and fatal in slow motion if ignored. Most of the builder trees we check need some correction.

Most of what we do in Elkhorn is not rescue work on old giants — it is getting thousands of young trees through their first decade on hard ground: depth corrections, structure pruning, chlorosis injections, and replacing the ones that were never going to make it with species that will.
The honest part is that some of the work we recommend in Elkhorn is small and unglamorous. A minor problem caught at year three — a girdling root, a co-dominant stem, a buried root flare — never becomes the expensive problem at year twenty. We would rather sell you the small visit now, and we say so on every estimate.
The old core near Main Street gets the other half of our attention: the mature maples and hackberries the original town planted, which deserve better than a topping crew with a coupon. And because Elkhorn is barely fifteen minutes from the shop, an estimate here happens fast and a storm call happens faster.
