How to Tell Powdery Mildew From Other White Coatings on Leaves

It sits on the surface and it rubs off
Your thumb wipes it clean
The fungus grows on the outside of the leaf and anchors shallowly. Green smearing under a white thumbprint confirms it. Nothing else white behaves this way.
It is on the top of the leaf
Powdery mildew colonizes upper surfaces first on most hosts. Anything white confined to the underside is a different problem.
It showed up in late summer
Warm days, humid nights and heavy dew are its conditions, which here means late July onward. Spring appearances are uncommon.
One species has it and its neighbor does not
Powdery mildews are largely host-specific. A coated lilac beside a clean oak is normal and does not mean the oak is next.
It is something else if
It will not wipe off, or it is not on the blade
The white is fluffy and on the stems
Woolly aphids or soft scale, both making white waxy coverings. Squash one: insect, not dust.
The leaf is stippled, with fine webbing
Spider mites. Dusty and bronzed rather than white, and the damage is inside the leaf where a thumb cannot reach.
Fuzz underneath, angular patches above
Downy mildew, a different organism on a different schedule. Commoner on garden perennials than trees, and it wants free water, not humid air.
It is a hard film
Mineral residue from sprinkler water, or spray drift. Both leave a chalky deposit that resists a thumb and lands in a pattern.
Where to Look for Powdery Mildew Before Deciding to Treat It

North side, against a fence, behind the garage. Mildew concentrates wherever air stalls and dew sits longest, which names the real cause.
The newest growth
Where mildew does real harm, new shoots distort and stay stunted. Coating on mature leaves alone is cosmetic.
The plant beside it
A clean neighbor of another species is expected. A whole hedge coated end to end is a siting problem.
Tiny black specks late in the season
Overwintering structures forming in the white mat. Next year's inoculum is being set right here.
Send a photo of the tree and one of the damage. An arborist will name it before anybody drives out.
The same planting, left alone
First August
A white haze on the shaded side of a lilac. It looks alarming, and the plant drops its leaves on schedule six weeks later, unharmed.
The following summer
It returns earlier, because the fungus overwintered in the litter and bud scales right there. Earlier arrival is the first real change.
Third season, on a shade tree
The same dusting, no growth loss, no dieback, nothing worth spending on. This is where most of these end.
Third season, on ninebark or lilac
New shoots distorting, the shrub thinning inside, bloom reduced. The plant is being held back, not merely marked.
Fifth season, on the susceptible hosts
A sparse shrub that never grew into its space. Nothing died and nothing was going to, but the planting failed at its job.
A plant coated year after year is telling you it is in the wrong spot. Crowded, shaded, still air, often too much nitrogen.

Thinning for airflow, clearing neighbors, cutting out coated stems. This does more for next August than anything sprayed then.
Leaf-out, low pressure

Cool nights and low humidity keep infection minimal. No benefit to spraying this early.
First protective window

Only on hosts with a history of damage, and before symptoms show. Protectants keep clean tissue clean and do little to a colonized leaf.
Humid nights, the run-up
July and August
Peak conditions. On plants that need it, coverage holds through this stretch. On everything else, this is when people call and we talk them out of it.
Coated and dropping
September to November
The leaves are about to fall and treatment does nothing. Raking litter off a susceptible shrub is the useful task.
Weather drives this more than a crew does. A hot dry August shuts it down and a humid one overwhelms a good program.

Why Powdery Mildew Is Usually a Siting Problem, Not a Disease to Spray
Pest and disease treatmentsPowdery mildew breaks the rule that governs almost every other leaf fungus. Apple scab, anthracnose and needle cast need liquid water before a spore germinates, which is why they follow the spring rains. Powdery mildew does not. It germinates in humid air and does worse on a wet leaf, which is why it arrives in the pattern eastern Nebraska specializes in: warm days, heavy dew, still nights.
Follow that logic and the treatment falls out of it. The fungus needs stagnant humid air held against a leaf all night, and what produces that is a plant crowded against a fence with three other shrubs pressed into it. Thin the planting, open the interior, stop pushing nitrogen, water at the roots in the morning. That costs one dormant visit and addresses the cause.
That leaves a short list where a spray program is honestly warranted: ninebark, susceptible lilacs and a few ornamentals where the fungus attacks new growth and holds the plant back year after year. Everything else gets the same answer. It is late August, the leaves come down in a month, and there is nothing here worth your money. We put that in writing on the estimate, which is not how most companies handle a customer asking for treatment.
