How to Tell Verticillium Wilt From Other Causes of a Wilting Limb

One limb at a time, and the sapwood is streaked
The wilt is one-sided
A single limb or one side of the crown, the rest holding normal leaves. The disease follows the plumbing, and the plumbing is sectored.
The leaves wilted before they browned
Limp, then scorched at the margins, then dried on the twig. That sequence says water stopped moving.
There is streaking in the sapwood
Cut a wilted branch an inch across and look at the ring under the bark. Olive-green streaks on maple, darker brown on ash.
The species is on the list
Maple, ash, catalpa and redbud are the common hosts here, with smoketree, linden and magnolia. Oaks and conifers are off the list.
It is something else if
The wood is clean, or the damage is outside
The sapwood is clean and the tree is thin
Drought, root damage or a buried root collar. A water problem that responds to water.
The limb has dead bark on one side
A canker or old wound, sitting in one place. Look for a sunken, cracked margin rather than anything inside the wood.
There is sawdust or a hole at the limb base
A borer girdled it. An insect problem, different treatment, better outlook if the tree is otherwise healthy.
Whole tree collapsed at once
Root failure, girdling roots, or herbicide. A vascular fungus rarely takes a whole canopy in a week.

Note which one and photograph it. Next summer's pattern means nothing without a record of this one.
A fresh cut through sapwood
Take a branch an inch through and look at the outer ring of wood. Streaking is the strongest field evidence there is.
The rest of the canopy
Smaller, paler leaves elsewhere in the crown mean the disease is chronic rather than one acute strike.
The root collar and the soil
Buried collars, trenching scars and recent grading all matter, because this fungus enters through damaged roots.
Send a photo of the tree and one of the damage. An arborist will name it before anybody drives out.
The same tree, watched over time
Year one
One limb flags in midsummer. Everyone assumes storm damage or drought and it gets cut off without anybody looking at the wood.
Year two
Nothing happens. The tree leafs out normally and last summer is forgotten. This is common, and why the disease is so often missed.
Year three
Another limb, on a different side, and leaves elsewhere in the crown are smaller. Now the pattern is real.
Year four
Either the tree stabilizes with a thinner crown, or the flagging accelerates. Which one depends heavily on how it was watered.
Year five
On a tree that lost the argument, enough crown is gone that the question is now risk rather than health.
Many trees with this disease recover on their own and keep going for years. That is why nothing gets removed on the strength of one flagged limb.

Trees are not removed on a winter guess. A limb flagged but not clearly dead waits for leaf-out, because trees recover from this and many have been cut down needlessly.

Why We Ask You to Wait Before Removing a Tree With Verticillium Wilt
Tree risk assessmentVerticillium wilt is one of the few tree diseases where the common mistake is acting too fast. A limb flags in July, the homeowner concludes the tree is dying, somebody quotes a removal, and a silver maple with thirty years left goes into a chipper. The disease is unpredictable in the direction that favors patience: many infected trees wall the fungus off and carry on for a long time.
The confirmation is cheap and worth doing first. Cut through a wilted branch, look at the outer ring of sapwood, see whether it is streaked. That two-minute check separates a vascular disease from a borer, a canker or drought, and each has a different answer. Where real money is involved, a lab culture settles it for less than a removal costs.
After that the management is unglamorous and it works. Water deeply and infrequently through July and August rather than lightly and often. Feed in fall, moderately, based on what the soil is short of. Take out dead wood in the dormant season. Then look again next June and compare it to the photograph. Telling somebody to spend two summers watering before deciding is not a job we can invoice, and it is still the right advice more often than not.
