How to Tell Iron Chlorosis From Other Causes of Yellow Leaves

Hold a leaf to the light. A green lattice on a yellow background is the whole diagnosis.
New growth is worse than old growth
Iron does not move inside a tree, so this year's leaves go pale first. Last year's interior leaves can still look normal.
It is a pin oak, river birch or maple
Those three, plus silver maple, account for most of it here. They evolved on acid soil and were planted into ours anyway.
It is worse near concrete
Trees against a driveway or foundation sit in soil that leaches lime out of the concrete and backfill, pushing pH higher.
It is something else if
The pattern is uniform, oldest first, or on the margins
The whole leaf is evenly pale
Usually nitrogen, oldest leaves first, because nitrogen moves within the tree. Feeding fixes it. Iron will not.
The edges are brown and crisp
Leaf scorch from drought, road salt or damaged roots. Water and mulch matter; an injection is money on the wrong problem.
New shoots are yellow, twisted and small
Herbicide drift, usually a lawn product on a warm windy afternoon. It looks alarming and usually grows out.
One branch is yellow and the rest is fine
Something local to that limb, a canker or a wound. A deficiency does not pick one branch.
Where to Look for Iron Chlorosis Before Trunk Injection

Growth at the branch tips shows iron shortage first. Pale tips over green interior leaves is the direction of travel.
The upper twigs
Bare twig ends at the top of the crown mean years, not months, and change what a treatment can honestly promise.
A single leaf against the sky
Green lattice on yellow is chlorosis. Even fading with brown edges is drought or salt. This one look settles most cases.
What the tree is planted in
Driveway edge, foundation backfill, or ground scraped flat before the house went up. Nothing like native prairie.
Send a photo of the tree and one of the damage. An arborist will name it before anybody drives out.
The same pin oak, left alone
Year one
A few pale leaves on the sunny side in late June. Everyone assumes a dry stretch and waits for rain.
Year two
The whole canopy reads yellow from the street by July, veins still green. This is the cheapest and most effective moment to treat.
Year three
Leaves open smaller and thinner, margins scorch by August, and the tree drops them early. Photosynthesis runs well under normal all season.
Year four
Bare twig ends across the top of the crown. Newly exposed bark starts to sunscald, and borers and cankers find the weakened wood.
Year five
A third of the crown is deadwood. Iron greens up what leaves remain, but nothing regrows branches. This is now a pruning and risk conversation.
The yellow is reversible. The branch dieback that follows it is not. Everything worth saving on a chlorotic tree is saved in the first two or three years.
The Summer Window for Treating Iron Chlorosis With Trunk Injection

No leaves means no symptom to grade and no transpiration to carry an injection. Any diagnosis now is a guess.
Leaf-out, the first read
Late April into mid May
Color is developing and the canopy is still expanding. Worth walking, not yet worth injecting.

Late May through July
Full leaf, strong transpiration, and the symptom at its most obvious. Green-up usually shows within a few weeks.
Late summer, still workable
August into September
Uptake is slower in dry August soil and the response may wait until spring. Better than waiting a year, worse than June.
Dormant
October through February
No water moving, nothing to inject into. This is soil work and planning season, not treatment season.
A drought-stressed tree takes up an injection poorly. In a dry summer the crew waters the tree first and injects a week later rather than force material into a trunk that is not drinking.

Why Omaha Soil Causes Iron Chlorosis in the First Place
Iron injectionsIron chlorosis is not a shortage. Eastern Nebraska clay holds plenty of iron, but our soils sit at a high pH, above which iron binds into compounds a root cannot pull apart. The tree is standing in what it needs and cannot open the container, which is why bags of general fertilizer do nothing.
Construction sharpened the problem across the metro. Grading strips the topsoil off a lot, and what goes back around the foundation is subsoil mixed with concrete washout and limestone fill. Then a pin oak or river birch goes in ten feet from the driveway, and both came from acid woodland ground. The tree coasts on nursery soil and its own reserves for a few years, then the newest leaves go pale.
Trunk injection works because it skips the soil entirely. Material goes into the sapwood and rides the water column into the leaves, which is why it needs a full canopy and why we will not do it in April. It is effective and it is not a cure: the chemistry is unchanged and the tree drifts back toward yellow. If your tree is young, badly sited, and one of the three species that struggle here, replacing it costs less over twenty years than injecting it forever.
