What iron chlorosis looks like
In eastern Nebraska, it's common to see slow-growing pin oak or silver maple trees with yellow leaves and possibly some branch dieback. This condition, iron chlorosis, affects many trees, shrubs, and other ornamental plantings across the state.
It's especially noticeable in spring and summer, when a tree that should be lush and green instead turns from green to yellow. Oak trees in particular are more susceptible to chlorosis than many other species.
Why it happens
Iron chlorosis is caused by poorly drained or compacted soils, or by soils with a high calcium content, characterized by pH levels above 7.5.
That high soil pH causes iron, which is usually present in plentiful quantities in the soil, to become tied up chemically and unavailable for the plant to pick up and use. Since trees need iron to produce the chlorophyll that keeps leaves green and lets them convert sunlight into food, the result is yellowing leaves, slowed growth, and eventually dieback of branches if the deficiency isn't corrected.

Because the underlying cause is soil chemistry rather than an infection, treatment focuses on getting iron into a form the tree can actually use, rather than fighting a pathogen.
