A live tree bends, holds a climber, and takes a rope where you put one. A dead tree does none of that reliably. Dead wood is the one case where waiting genuinely raises the price — every season it stands, the list of safe ways to take it down gets shorter.
The metro's epidemic
Omaha has lost more than nine thousand ash trees to the borer; the D-shaped exit holes in the bark are its signature. Borer-killed ash dries fast and fails ugly — we least want these standing near a house another winter.
The slow reveal
A tree that skipped leafing out, bark sloughing off in sheets, shelf mushrooms on the trunk. Each says the wood is past saving, and the mushrooms say decay has had time to work.
The dropped hints
Dead trees rarely fail all at once. They shed — a limb after wind that should not have taken one, then a bigger limb. One dropping wood over anything you care about has moved to the front of the schedule.

In order of decay
Recently dead: still climbable, carefully
A tree dead less than a season usually still holds a climber and a rigging line. This is the cheap window.
A year or two on: the bucket takes over
Once we do not trust the wood under a climber's weight, the work moves to a bucket truck — nobody in the tree, cuts made from beside it. That needs machine access.
Fully brittle: crane only
Dry dead wood snaps instead of bending and cannot be rigged against itself. At that point the only honest method is a crane lifting pieces never asked to hold anything — and the price reflects the machine.
Every stage: nothing swings over a target
Dead limbs shed unpredictably under saw vibration alone. Drop zones get cleared wider, the ground crew works farther back.
The takedown itself is quick
No canopy weight, no foliage to fight. The care is in what we refuse to do — with the right method on site, the takedown often beats a live tree the same size.

Dormant reads as dead to most people, especially in winter. The reliable signs: a full season with no leaves, bark falling away in sheets, brittle twigs that snap gray inside, fungus on the trunk. Send us a photo — telling dead from struggling is free.
Honestly, sometimes not. Standing over a house, driveway or play area, it should not wait for the next windstorm. In an open corner of an acreage it threatens nothing and can be scheduled like any other job. Where it stands matters more than the fact that it died.
Because dead wood dries, and dry wood takes methods off the table. A recently dead tree can often be climbed and priced like a live one; later it may be bucket-only, eventually crane-only. Each step up is a bigger machine on the invoice.
The same published ranges as any removal — $1,000 to $3,000 for smaller trees, $4,000 to $8,000 for large ones — with condition deciding where it lands. A brittle tree that needs a crane sits at the top.
If it is already dead, that decision has been made. But if your other ash are still alive, they can very likely be protected by injection for far less than a removal costs. We will run the treat-or-remove arithmetic with you for free.
Only when the wood still earns it — the arborist's call, not the calendar's. Declining to climb is not upselling the bucket or the crane — it is the reason our climbers have made it home from every job since 1997.
On acreage, away from anything it can hit, a standing dead tree is genuinely good habitat and leaving it is legitimate. Near structures, driveways or property lines it is a liability your insurer may eventually notice too.

Most tree decisions reward patience, and we say so even when it costs us the booking. Dead trees are the exception, and emerald ash borer made them a mass exception here — Omaha's ash died on roughly the same clock, which means they are drying toward crane-only on roughly the same clock too.
Wood gets its forgiveness from moisture; a dead trunk loses it season by season until the tree cannot be climbed, then cannot be rigged, and every step strikes a cheaper method off your quote. The tree does not look much different from the curb at each stage. The invoice does.
A dead tree in the open on an acreage can stand for years as habitat, and if that is your situation we will say so and leave rather than use urgency as a sales lever. The urgency is real only where the tree has a target — and there, the earliest call is the cheapest one you will ever make.
